Baby Name Sampler, Summer 2009

na00086a

Ever sit around wondering what people are naming their babies right now? Me too.

I’ve gathered a list of baby names used this summer so that we could look at the trends, see what names are out there and also just because it’s fun. The names came from a variety of hospital web nurseries.

I’ve put the names into categories based on the first names. The middle names don’t necessarily follow the same trend or style. A few names could fit into more than one category.

On to the names…Comment and let me know what you think!

It’s safe to say that the name BENTLY, in a variety of spellings, is increasing in popularity. I came across that name several times during my search and it was used for both boys and girls —a new addition to the unisex name options.

That’s it for today. See you again soon!

Alternatives to the Top 10 Baby Names

j0438040

Many of the Top 10 baby names in the United States have great International variations. For you parents-to-be who find yourselves torn between choosing a name you love from the Top 10 and not wanting to use a name that’s already ultra-popular, I’ve put together a list of stylish variations from around the globe.

Let me know your favorites!

GIRLS’ NAMES

ISABELLA — (German) ISOBELLE

EMILY — (French) AMELIE

OLIVIA — (French) OLIVETTE

SOPHIA — (Scandinavian) SONJA

ELIZABETH — (Spanish) LISETA

CHLOE — (Hawaiian) KOLOE

BOYS’ NAMES

JACOB — (Italian) GIACOMO

MICHAEL — (Finnish) MIKKO

JOSHUA — (Dutch) JOZUA

DANIEL — (Finnish) TANELI

ALEXANDER — (Russian) SASHA

ANTHONY — (French) ANTIONE

WILLIAM — (Irish) LIAM

CHRISTOPHER — (Italian) CRISTOVANO

MATTHEW — (Spanish) MATEO

Of all of the names on my list, I’m especially drawn to OLIVETTE. It’s very unique—I’ve certainly never met an OLIVETTE. At the same time, it’s accessible. Most people could probably guess how to spell it and would be able to pronounce it when they see it (two qualities many people look for when they want to step outside the name box). It’s also a lyrical name; OLIVETTE rolls right off the tongue.

What do you think? Leave a comment and let us all know! Also email me and say hi — I love to hear from readers. J

Sporty Baby Names: US Open Tennis

j0437042

I’m a pretty big tennis fan, so I’ve been really enjoying the US Open for the past few days. Andy Roddick’s loss tonight was a bit of a heartbreak though. I was rooting for him to win the whole thing. Especially after that last Wimbledon match…C’est la vie. There’s always next year…

Now I think I’m going to put all my rooting power behind Melanie Oudin. How cool is she? Go Melanie!

I try not to miss any good baby name spotting opportunities and the US Open is no exception. I downloaded the US Open iPhone application and read all the player’s names so I could bring you my favorites. One thing I love about these International sporting events is that the names come from all around the world. So much fun!

Here is my list — I pulled out the names that I thought were most interesting. Let me know what your favorites are…

Usually when I go through lists of names there are a few that jump out as possible favorites. Today, there’s no contest….I’m really loving the name TAMARINE. So pretty! Plus, it has that coveted quality of being unique without being weird. I’m not sure about nicknames though. I’m trying to think of something other than Tammy. Any ideas?

Other names I especially like from the list are SORANA, CATALINA and LILIA. From the boy’s side, I like MATTHAIS (cool alternative to more common Matthew), RAFAEL and MARCO.

Hands down the most dedicated, tennis-y name goes to junior player TENNYS Sandgren. With a name like that, there’s a little pressure to do well at a sporting event like the US Open. Good luck, Tennys!

As always, I love to hear your thoughts. Let me know what your favorites are — and if you have any cool nicknames for TAMARINE.

ASK AMANDA: How to Avoid Using the Next Most Popular Name

j0440614

I’m back with another edition of ASK AMANDA. This is a topic that I know is on the mind of many soon-to-be-parents!

Ask Amanda

Q:    My top baby name list used to include Emma, Jacob and Zachary. All of those names have become really popular now. I still love those names, but I don’t want my baby to have a name that’s too common. How do I avoid picking a name that will end up on the top of the charts?

A:    You have really good taste in names. The trouble is that you share that good taste with a lot of other people. Emma, Jacob and Zachary are all great names!

Some parents want to pick popular names, some don’t mind one way or the other, but for those that do … how do you choose a cool baby name that you love while making sure it stays unique?

I don’t offer any guarantees, but here are some tip-offs that a name is on its way to becoming ultra-popular:

1. CELEBRITY NAME

If there’s a new celebrity on the scene with an interesting or unusual name, it’s likely the name will increase in popularity.

Ex: MILEY Cyrus (MILEY wasn’t even on the charts before 2007) and ISLA Fisher (before 2008 ISLA hadn’t been in the Top 1000 since 1908)

It’s also possible that the name will become so closely associated with the celebrity that your baby’s name will always bring to mind that celebrity.

Some celebs are so closely associated with their unique first names that they don’t even need a last name to be recognizable — think PARIS, TIGER, OPRAH and BEYONCE.

2. CELEBRITY BABY NAME

Similar to #1 above, if a celebrity picks an interesting baby name, you can almost guarantee it will become more popular.

Ex: BROOKLYN Beckham created a wave of baby Brooklyns. Interestingly, more for girls than boys. Possibly because the name’s parts — BROOK and LYN — are each more associated with girls’ names.

Now, note that I said interesting baby name, not odd baby name.

Celebrity baby names like KAL-EL Cage and PILOT INSPEKTOR Lee haven’t had a similar impact on parents-to-be because these names are just too off-beat for the average parent — but you didn’t need me to tell you that.

3. CHECK THE NAME’S HISTORY ON THE SOCIAL SECURITY WEBSITE

The Social Security website is a great tool for soon-to-be-parents. You can search names to see how popular they’ve been over the years.

It’s obvious that a name is popular if it’s already in the Top 25 most popular names, but what if it’s not? Are you parents seeking unique names safe then? Not necessarily…

If the name you’re considering wasn’t in the Top 500 list 5years ago, but then debuted at 300, moved up to 100 within a few years and this year is at 60, it’s a good bet that it might be even more popular next year.

Watch out for these fast risers! If a name has been increasing in popularity quickly, even though it hasn’t reached the top of the charts yet, there’s a good chance it will before long.

4. CHECK NAMES FROM POPULAR TV SHOWS, MOVIES AND BOOKS

Remember that scene from Splash starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah where Tom’s character tells Daryl’s character than she needs to pick a human name because no one can pronounce her mermaid name? He suggests a few names, including Jennifer, Joanie and Linda. Then she sees the street sign for Madison Avenue and says she wants her name to be Madison. It’s a funny moment in the movie because at that time in our history Madison wasn’t a first name and Tom’s character tells her so!

I suspect a lot of people who saw that movie in 1984 fell in love with the name Madison because it was different and interesting. Now 25 years later the name that wasn’t a name has become quite popular — it hit the Top 10 in 1997 and hasn’t looked back since.

So before you choose a name, have a look and see whether it’s the name of a character in a popular TV show, movie or book.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the name CULLEN grows in popularity now that Stephenie Meyer has used it as the surname for her popular vampire family and the dreamy Edward Cullen in her mega-popular Twilight series.

Is anyone else out there on Team Jacob or is it just me…?

All that said, you can’t completely safeguard yourself from all future popular names.

You could choose the perfect, unique name for your baby this year, but if the rumors are true and the next Sex and the City movie features Carrie and Mr. Big having a baby that they just happen to name the exact same perfect, unique name you chose this year, there isn’t a whole lot you can do — you will be ahead of the curve though for having chosen it first.

Good luck!

Knoxville News Sentinel Book Review

j0433868

Mary Constantine wrote a fun article about food names for the Knoxville News Sentinel and featured Baby Names Made Easy:

“I recently became a great aunt.

My niece, Elizabeth, gave birth to an 8-pound, 4-ounce baby girl in late June.

The baby has chubby pink cheeks, a rosebud mouth and a head full of dark hair.

She’s definitely a keeper.

When I learned that Elizabeth and husband Curtis were expecting, I picked up the book “Baby Names Made Easy” (Simon and Schuster, $15) that had been laying on my desk.

News Sentinel editorial assistant Lisa Gentry had left it for me months earlier after noticing that it was organized by category, including one for food and drink.

Naming a child after a food item isn’t a new idea.

I’ve worked with women named Sherri and Cheri, and attended school with girls named Ginger and Pepper.

So there was a distinct possibility this book would include a name suitable for my great niece.

I loved the name Coco, but knew that Elizabeth and Curtis were too traditional to consider that.

I also liked the name Plum, but maybe that’s because it’s one of my favorite fruits.

Other female names that caught my eye included Cayenne, Brie, Mimosa, and, yes, even Apple, the name actress Gwyneth Paltrow chose for her daughter.

But everyone knows there are other considerations besides how the word rolls off the tongue when selecting a child’s name.

In this case, my great niece’s last name is Strange.

Knowing that, the names Coco Strange, Plum Strange and Apple Strange become totally unacceptable.

After all, children find ways to make fun of each other without handing them a gift.

In the end, Curtis and Elizabeth didn’t need my help naming their child.

One look at their precious girl and it’s apparent that Ava Claire Strange is the name she was meant to hold.

It’s a peach of a name.

Hmm, another one of my favorite fruits.”

I think Ava Claire is a peach of a name, too. Great choice! I’ve always secretly loved the name Pepper though…but, I’m not sure Pepper Strange really works. Though, it’s better than Berry Strange…

I can tell that J. K. Rowling had fun coming up with all these names because they’re so fun to read. Some of these names are probably too far out there for some parents, like DEMPSTER or RAGMAR. But there are quite a few cool names here.

Here are my faves from this list: BRODERICK, EVAN and GULLIVER. I also think that DUNCAN is so nerdy, it’s actually cool.

If you looking for ways to get at cool nicknames, try CARADOC for “Doc” and CORMAC for “Mac.”

Harry Potter Names: Part 1, Witches

j0431597

Harry’s back! The latest Harry Potter film has finally been released and I can’t wait to see it…I’m counting down the hours. While waiting for the release, I’ve been sorting through character names and picking out some of my favorites.

J. K. Rowling isn’t just a great writer, she’s a brilliant namer. In the Harry Potter series, she mixed in mainstream names like HARRY and RON with unique names like HERMIONE and LUNA, very unusual names like SIRIUS and SEVERUS and then truly off-the-wall names like HELIOTROPE, KENNILWORTHY and MUNDUNGUS. For a name nerd like myself, it made for great fun while reading the books.

Today we’ll look at witches and tomorrow we’ll check out the wizards. J

There are so many fun names on this list it’s hard to narrow it down to a few favorites. But after a lot of careful deliberation, I came up with these faves: CELESTINA, LAVENDER, OLIVE and VIOLETTA. This is a loose list and I could easily have added several more, like AURORA, CALLIDORA, MAGENTA, MINERVA, ORLA and PENELOPE (love PENNY as a nickname).

Honorable Mention: MUSIDORA. I absolutely love this name, but would never be so bold as to use it for a baby. Anyone else out there like MUSIDORA or is it just me? I find the musical quality of the name very attractive.

Anyhow, that’s all for today. Check back tomorrow for wizard names.
