Celeb Birth: COSIMA Times Two

00182765

There’s a new name in the celebrity baby naming world. Believe it or not, there have been two baby Cosimas born in the last few weeks. What are the odds of that?

First, a bit about the name Cosima. It’s a Greek name that means “universe, order.” It’s the feminine form of Cosmo. It has the same root as words like cosmos, cosmic and cosmonaut. No surprise, you’ll find the name in the Astronomy chapter of BABY NAMES MADE EASY.

So what celebs chose Cosima?

COSIMA #1

First we have Cosima Violet – the daughter of Claudia Schiffer and Matthew Vaughn. She was born on May 14, 2010. Older siblings include Caspar who’s 7 and Clementine who’s 5 ½. Apparently they’re going with the “C” initial theme from mom Claudia’s name. I’ve always wondered how the parent who doesn’t share the initial feels. Any thoughts?

Sibset: If I were grading this sibset match, I’d give it an A. Caspar, Clementine and Cosima make a great sibset because the names are a good style match. They all have an antique, classic, yet quirky feel.

COSIMA #2

The second Cosima is the daughter of Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars. The report I read didn’t give a birth date, but baby Cosima was apparently born in June. The couple have another daughter named Romy who’s 3 ½.

Here’s my question. What’s the baby’s last name? Is she Cosima Mars? If so, that’s a very astro-friendly name! Maybe she’s Cosima Coppola – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I really like alliteration. I know not everyone does though. Either way, this is a unique name.

Sibset: This is an interesting sibset because the names aren’t really a style match. They’re both a little quirky, so that fits, but Cosima is quite feminine while Romy is a unisex name. What do you think of that?

IT’S YOUR TURN…

What do you think of the name Cosima?

Happy naming,

  Amanda

Soccer Fanatics, Hyundais & Baby Naming

j0433881

Has anyone seen the Hyundai ad about the baby in England supposedly named after the soccer team in the 1960s? The ad is running during the ESPN World Cup coverage. The name from the ad (I had to listen to it several times to transcribe this…) is:

Paula St. John Lawrence Lawler Byrne Strong Yeats Stevenson Callaghan Hunt Milne Smith Thompson Shankly Bennett Paisley O’Sullivan

Watch it for yourself: Hyundai FIFA World Cup Baby Name Ad

Thanks to Wikipedia, I was able to find these names attached to the Liverpool Football Club.

Anyone out there dedicated enough to their sports team to try something similar? I meet someone recently who plans on naming a son after her favorite baseball player (Bengie Molina of the SF Giants)—but not the whole team!

What do you think about naming your child after your favorite sports team? Dedicated or wacky?

Happy naming,

  Amanda

Cool Names from the 2010 Edgar Nominees

j0321206Do you like scary mysteries? I do. I’m always eager to see what books are nominated for the Edgar awards so I can add even more books to my ever-growing piles of Books-I-Want-To-Read.

This year, some of the authors have pretty noteworthy names. Here are the names I thought were most interesting:

*I’ve done some research to figure out what these initial names stand for. Here’s what I found:

L. C. Tyler – According to Wikipedia the L stands for Len. I couldn’t confirm it on his website though. I did learn that he has a Border Collie named Thistle. Cute. For more: http://www.lctyler.com/

R. A. Scotti – R.A. stands for Rita Anjelica. The biography says that she decided to go by R. A. because her field was dominated by male writers so she decided to pose as a man. For more: http://rascotti.com/events.htm

P. D. James – P. D. stands for Phyllis Dorothy. For more: http://www.randomhouse.com/features/pdjames/abouttheauthor.html

NAME IN THE NEWS: Ke$ha

j0445004Let’s talk about singer Ke$ha. She’s making quite a splash these days and she has a very unique name (obviously!). Do you think it has the power to influence parents?

Most parents would not be so daring as to spell their baby’s name with a symbol. So duplicating “Ke$ha” is probably out. However, there’s been a lot of buzz about how to pronounce her name. When you type “ke$ha’s name” into Google, the search prompter even suggests things like “how do you pronunce ke$ha’s name” and “how do you say ke$ha’s name.” Clearly, a lot of people are curious about the name.

For the record, Ke$ha is pronounced “kesh-uh,” which is quite pretty, I think. I suspect some parents out there will agree and we might see more baby Keshas in the future. What do you think?

I did a quick search on the Social Security website and “Kesha” was on the charts between 1970 and 1982. The highest it ever got was #524 in 1974.

According to wikipedia, Ke$ha’s full name is Kesha Rose Sebert. Kesha Rose is a very nice first/middle combo.

What do you think of the name Kesha? Do you think we’ll see more baby Keshas running around in the next few years?

Do Baby Names and College Mascots mix?

j0434905

Talk about school pride…a couple has named their son Crimson Tide, after the University of Alabama mascot.

http://www.rolltide.com/

If that weren’t enough, their last name is Redd. So the baby’s full name is Crimson Tide Redd. Crimson. Redd. Get it?

If you think color-related names are cool,

I have a whole chapter about them in BABY NAMES MADE EASY

The article I read said that before the baby was born mom and dad agreed that dad would get to name the baby. He liked the idea of using his last name as a springboard. Mission accomplished, I say.

What do you think about using a mascot for a baby’s name?

Here are some mascots and team nicknames for your consideration as baby names:

Baldwin Eagle (Boston College)

Bishop (Ohio Wesleyan)

Duke (Duquesne)

Dutch (Central College)

Freddie / Frieda Falcon (Bowling Green State University)

Golden Bear (University of California, Berkeley)

Herbie Husker (University of Nebraska)

Hoosier (Indiana)

Killian Gael (Iona College)

Magnus (Cleveland State)

Maverick (Texas-Arlington)

Rodney Raven (Anderson University)

Rudy Flyer (University of Dayton)

Sammy Seahawk (UNC Wilmington)

Tiger (Princeton)

Tommy Trojan (University of Southern California)

Wilbur / Wilma Wildcat (University of Arizona)

Wolverine (Michigan)
