Name Your Baby Like a Celebrity : DAVID & VICTORIA BECKHAM

THE BECKHAMS

Everyone (me especially!) is eagerly awaiting the birth of David and Victoria Beckham’s fourth child. They were very creative with the names of their first three — Brooklyn, Romeo & Cruz — so you know that whatever they choose will be unique!   Reportedly, Author: Vtornetthis fourth child is going to be their first girl and their top name choice is Atlanta. What I’ve heard is that Atlanta is a reference to the Atlantic Ocean, which connects the Beckham’s native England and their current home, the United States. Awww… J

NAME YOUR BABY LIKE A CELEBRITY

The name Atlanta may be a little more daring than you want to go, but you can choose a name with a special meaning for you and your family and be as daring or traditional as you want. Ideas are everywhere: ·         The name of the college where you met ·         A name that reflects your cultural heritage ·         The city you lived in when you conceived your baby ·         The name of the singer who sings “your song” ·         The name of the person who introduced you ·         The name on the month you met ·         The possibilities are endless!

Does your name create your destiny?

NATURE VS. NURTURE

Catherine Aurora Gray recently became the youngest person to discover a supernova. Catherine means “pure,” but Aurora is a Roman goddess and means “dawn.” The name is usually heard tied to the Aurora Borealis. Is it a coincidence that someone named Aurora spends a lot of time watching the sky and spotting astronomical events?

Catherine Aurora’s dad is an amateur astronomer, so that CB030627may have factored into the name choice – and her penchant for searching the sky looking for supernovas – like father, like daughter? I don’t think we’ll settle the nature vs. nurture name debate with this one, but it’s always fun to consider.   Read more about the young astronomer: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/01/04/girl-10-becomes-youngest-to-discover-supernova/?hpt=T2

Flower Power: How do flower names rank?

LOVELY LILA

At my last book signing event (the East Bay Birth & Baby Fair), a new mom told me she’d named her daughter Lila because she loved flower names – one of Lila’s definitions is “lilac.” She was curious (and a little worried) about how popular Lila is with other parents. I love flower names, too, so I thought I’d put together a list of the flower names in the current Top 1000 and check on Lila’s popularity.

WHAT’S THE VERDICT?

So, how did Lila’s mom do? She did pretty well. She was hoping there weren’t too many other Lilas out there and there aren’t tons. It ranks in the mid-100s. I can see it getting more popular in the next few years though. Especially as similar sounding names like Lily and Lillian continue to gain ground.

A FIELD OF CHOICES

Here are some pretty unranked flower names that are worth a look:

JESENIA – so lovely!

KAMALA

LAVENDER

LILAC – one of my faves! So pretty and unique.

MAGNOLIA

MARIGOLD

OLIANA

POPPY – very British

POSY

Celeb Birth: COSIMA Times Two

00182765

There’s a new name in the celebrity baby naming world. Believe it or not, there have been two baby Cosimas born in the last few weeks. What are the odds of that?

First, a bit about the name Cosima. It’s a Greek name that means “universe, order.” It’s the feminine form of Cosmo. It has the same root as words like cosmos, cosmic and cosmonaut. No surprise, you’ll find the name in the Astronomy chapter of BABY NAMES MADE EASY.

So what celebs chose Cosima?

COSIMA #1

First we have Cosima Violet – the daughter of Claudia Schiffer and Matthew Vaughn. She was born on May 14, 2010. Older siblings include Caspar who’s 7 and Clementine who’s 5 ½. Apparently they’re going with the “C” initial theme from mom Claudia’s name. I’ve always wondered how the parent who doesn’t share the initial feels. Any thoughts?

Sibset: If I were grading this sibset match, I’d give it an A. Caspar, Clementine and Cosima make a great sibset because the names are a good style match. They all have an antique, classic, yet quirky feel.

COSIMA #2

The second Cosima is the daughter of Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars. The report I read didn’t give a birth date, but baby Cosima was apparently born in June. The couple have another daughter named Romy who’s 3 ½.

Here’s my question. What’s the baby’s last name? Is she Cosima Mars? If so, that’s a very astro-friendly name! Maybe she’s Cosima Coppola – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I really like alliteration. I know not everyone does though. Either way, this is a unique name.

Sibset: This is an interesting sibset because the names aren’t really a style match. They’re both a little quirky, so that fits, but Cosima is quite feminine while Romy is a unisex name. What do you think of that?

IT’S YOUR TURN…

What do you think of the name Cosima?

Baby Name Sampler, Summer 2009

na00086a

Ever sit around wondering what people are naming their babies right now? Me too.

I’ve gathered a list of baby names used this summer so that we could look at the trends, see what names are out there and also just because it’s fun. The names came from a variety of hospital web nurseries.

I’ve put the names into categories based on the first names. The middle names don’t necessarily follow the same trend or style. A few names could fit into more than one category.

On to the names…Comment and let me know what you think!

ASK AMANDA: “Ocean” Baby Names

Happy Friday!!! Here’s your weekly ASK AMANDA:

Ask Amanda

Q:    I love the ocean and am looking for some good baby names that are related to water. Do you have any recommendations?

A:    You’re in luck because a lot of interesting baby names are related to water one way or another.

I think you could go a few different ways with this. You could choose a name that says “water,” you could choose a name that has a water-related meaning or you could choose the name of a watery location you like.

Here are some suggestions:

OBVIOUS WATER NAMES

GIRL BABY NAMES

BAY

BROOKE

LAKE

OCEAN / OCEANA / OCÉANE

BOY BABY NAMES

BAY

BAYOU

LOCH

OCEAN / OCEANUS

RIVER

I especially like OCEAN and its variations for boys or girls. It’s somehow more sophisticated than nature names like RAINBOW and SUNSHINE, which tend to feel more like nicknames. I think BAY is a great middle name pick because it’s short and can easily be matched with other names.

BABY NAMES WITH WATER MEANINGS

GIRL BABY NAMES

ATHENA — Greek name meaning “from the sea”

GALIA —Hebrew name meaning “wave”

JORDANA — Hebrew name meaning “flowing down”

KYLA — Gaelic name meaning “narrow strait”

MARINA — Latin name meaning “sea”

MIHO — Japanese name meaning “beautiful bay”

RILLA — German name meaning “small stream”

SARITA — Hindi name meaning “river”

BOY BABY NAMES

BECK — English name meaning “stream”

DYLAN — Welsh name meaning “sea”

HURLEY — Irish name meaning “sea tide”

KAI —Hawaiian name meaning “sea”

MARINO — Latin name meaning “of the sea; sailor”

PHILMORE — Greek and Welsh name meaning “lover of the sea”

RIO — Spanish name meaning “river”

TAO — Chinese name meaning “wig waves”

YUKON — Native American name meaning “big river”

ZALE — Greek name meaning “strong sea”

This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as names with water-meanings are concerned. If you want more choices, read the NATURE chapter of BABY NAMES MADE EASY.

WATERY LOCATION BABY NAMES

GIRL BABY NAMES

CORAL

NYASA

OCEANIA

PACIFICA

RIVIERA

VENICE

BOY BABY NAMES

CASPIAN

HUDSON

JORDAN

NILE

ONTARIO

RHINE

TIGRIS

These are the names of just a few bodies of water and places known for water. You can make a list of your favorite water spots and see if any of them will make a good baby name. There’s a world of possibilities out there!

Good luck finding that perfect baby name!

Happy naming,

Fiery Picks for Baby Name of the Day

Yesterday I went to NERT training — Neighborhood Emergency Response Team. I agreed to do it for work. I learned all about how dangerous fires can be. You didn’t need to tell me that, but I learned a lot anyhow. Here are some of the highlights:

·         Call 911 before trying to put out even a small fire by myself (according to the video we watched small fires turn into large fires very fast!) — if it’s safe, it’s OK to try putting out the fire after calling 911

·         I should keep a pair of sneakers in my car in case there’s a disaster and I end up needing to walk (heels, cute flats and flip-flops aren’t made for long-distance walking)

·         I need to keep at least a five day supply of food and water on hand for my cat (and me, too) in case we need to shelter in place during a disaster

·         Triage is NOT for the faint of heart

Next week we’re going to learn about search and rescue and go through a simulated disaster scenario. We’re even going to get to put out an actual fire!

Anyhow, all this fire talk got me thinking about fire as a symbol. Fire can be dangerous, but it’s also essential for survival. It’s a symbol of passion and energy and life. I decided to put this inspiration to good use and to choose these fiery picks for Baby Name of the Day:

GIRLS’ NAME OF THE DAY:

AZARA — Persian for “red, flame”

BOYS’ NAME OF THE DAY:

IGNATIUS — Latin for “fire”

Azara is a beautiful name — unique without being weird or too difficult to spell and pronounce. Ignatius feels very classical — Cate Blanchett chose it last year for one of her sons. What do you think about these names?

Post a comment and let me know how you like these Baby Names of the Day.
