ASK AMANDA: A Name that Means “Complete”

Welcome to a new edition of ASK AMANDA. I have another question from Canada today. A big hello to my readers up north!

Ask Amanda

Q:    I am looking for a baby name that means COMPLETE.  I am pregnant with our third and last baby and really feel like this one completes our family.  So I am looking for a name that means that. Was hoping you would be able to help.

Many thanks. KRISTY, Downsview, ON, Canada

A:    This is a great question and one I’m sure many parents who are “completing” their families have considered, as well. I didn’t find a name that means “complete” exactly. I did find a bunch of names that touch on the same sentiment though. Here are my favorites from the names I found:

GIRLS

IRMA – “whole, entire” (also, IRMINA)

NATARA – “deeply rooted”

TERTIA – “third”

TRINITY – “triad”

UNITY – “oneness”

BOYS

KAIROS – “last, entire”

LEVI – “associated, together”

TREY – “three”

XAVIER – “new house”

There is a group of names that mean “powerful household,” which is a nice meaning, too. Some of the names in this group are: HENRIETTA, HARRIET, HARRY and HENRY.

Good luck! I know you’ll find a name you love. Let me know what you choose. J

Happy naming,

BABY NAMES OF THE WEEK: “Famous” Names

This week I flew down to Los Angeles for a meeting. It was a good meeting and the plane ride gave me plenty of time to contemplate my favorite Hollywood names. It also got me thinking about names that mean “famous” or something similar. Turns out there are quite a few good picks in this category and I’ve narrowed it down to two for today.

The Baby Names of the Week feature names befitting a future Hollywood star!

Here are my picks:

GIRLS’ BABY NAME OF THE WEEK

CLARA — Latin name meaning “famous, bright”

BOYS’ BABY NAME OF THE WEEK

RUPERT — German version of Robert, meaning “renowned”

I picked CLARA because it is a pretty and simple name with a beautiful meaning. It also calls to mind the classic Hollywood star, Clara Bow. I chose RUPERT because it stands out from the crowd and has a distinguished feel to it — something a fledgling star might be looking for. Plus, it is an interesting alternative to the popular name Robert.

There are several names in the Glory & Praise chapter of BABY NAMES MADE EASY that have similar meanings you might like. Check it out!

Want to know what celebrity names I came up with? Tune back in later this week. Up first though, check back Tuesday for 24 ways to name your baby after a relative without naming your baby after a relative… you’ll have to read it for yourself to see what I mean…

Happy Mother’s Day (plus a few related baby names)

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms, soon-to-be-moms and most especially Happy Mother’s Day to my mom!

In celebration of motherhood, I’ve decided to highlight some of the names that mean “mother” or, in one case, something pretty similar (see Boys’ section below).

        GIRLS’ NAMES

Amlika

Janikaa

Jarita

Maia, Maya

Neith

BOYS’ NAMES

Quigley

Quigley means “on the maternal side” — I was quite excited to find at least one boys’ name I could add to my list.

All these names, and many more, can be found in the Heritage & Family chapter in Baby Names Made Easy. Check it out!

I’m a little undecided about whether “mother” is an odd meaning for a baby’s name or whether it’s a charming tribute to motherhood. What do you think? Post a comment and let me know.

Celebrity Baby Name Alert: Petal Blossom Rainbow (Jamie Oliver)

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and wife Jools continued their floral naming tradition with third daughter PETAL BLOSSOM RAINBOW. Petal was born very early this morning at 2:46 am. She has two big sisters, Poppy Honey (7) and Daisy Boo (5). You can read more at The Sun website.

I’ve read criticism in the past over the Oliver’s naming choices. I think it’s due more to the middle names than first names alone — there’s nothing too unusual about Poppy, Daisy and Petal, but when you throw in Honey, Boo and Blossom Rainbow the result is a little more off-beat. I’m OK with that though. I think it’s fun to be a little more creative with middle names.
Plus, flower names are very trendy now and, personally, I’m a big fan. I’ve always found flower names sweet and ultra-feminine. What do you think? I’ve put together a list of some other celebrities who used flower names for their newborns.

CELEBRITY BABY FLOWER NAMES:

Bluebell Madonna (Geri Halliwell)

Charlie Tamara Tulip (Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O’Connell)

Daisy True (Meg Ryan)

Iris Sura (Renee O’Connor)

Jasmine Innes (Cristen Chin & Nigel Barker)

Kadence Clover (Lhotse Merriam & Tony Hawk)

Lily Aerin (Jennifer Stone & Fred Savage)

Lily Aster (Dara Kravitz & Gilbert Gottfried)

Lotus Marie (Rain Pryor & Yale Partlow)

Violet Maye (Jordyn Blum & Dave Grohl)

Violet Anne (Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck)

Lily-Rose Melody (Vanessa Paradis & Johnny Depp)

AND THEN THERE ARE THE ROSES, WHO DESERVE A LIST ALL THEIR OWN (note all these Roses — and one Rosie – are middle names):

Alabama Gypsy Rose (Drea de Matteo & Shooter Jennings)

Matilda Rose (Michelle Williams & Heath Ledger)

Brighton Rose (Joya Tillem & Jon Favreau)

Dolly Rebecca Rose (Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O’Connell)

Harper Rosie (Martie & Gareth Maguire)

Johnnie Rose (Melissa Etheridge & Tammy Lynn Michaels)

Leal Rose (Tamia & Grand Hill)

Maggie Rose (Tracey & Jon Stewart)

Seraphina Rose Elizabeth (Jennifer Garner & Ben AfflecK)

Emerson Rose (Teri Hatcher & Jon Tenney)

What I really want to know is what Jamie and Jools would have named the baby if it was a boy! Do you have any suggestions for them? If so, let me know!
