Island Baby Naming

na00086a

Tonight, I’m wrapped up in my thermals, a sweatshirt, a blanket and I have my cuddly cat next to me – I’m still freezing though. That’s summer in San Francisco for you. If you’re traveling here on vacation, come in the fall – that’s when we have warmer weather.

All this cold weather got me thinking about warmer locals, which led to island living, which eventually led to island naming. After a little research, I found that there are some interesting island names that could double as cool, unique baby names.

Here’s my list. I organized them into Girls’ and Boys’ lists, but that’s just one person’s opinion – mix and match as you see fit.

GIRLS’ BABY NAMES

CORSICA

IRELAND

JAMAICA

JAVA

SICILY

SUMATRA

TRINIDAD

BOYS’ BABY NAMES

CYPRUS

DEVON

FALKLAND

KODIAK

MELVILLE

SAMAR

SOMERSET

Lost actor Josh Holloway and wife Yessica Kumala went the island route and named their daughter Java in 2009.

What’s your favorite island name? Anything I should add to the list?

Happy naming,

  Amanda

I’ll be watching tonight and will be interested to learn how Ragan pronounces his name. Let me know what you think!

Survivor: Heroes, Villains & Baby Names

j0441706

Most people I’ve talked to agree that this was one of the best seasons of Survivor ever. Maybe it’s because they brought back some of the best players to ever play the game.

My fantasy finale was Rob v. Colby. It’s probably a good thing that didn’t happen though because I would have been tied up in knots trying to decide who to root for. As it was, I liked the ending. I thought Sandra played a smart game and she was my favorite of the three.

What did you think of the finale?

Let’s get to the reason we’re all here…Will Survivor influence baby naming? It wouldn’t be the first time. After Colby’s first season in Australia in early 2001, the name got a boost – going from #233 in 2000 to #99 in 2001. Could it happen again?

Here are the names of this season’s Survivor, in the order they left the show:

SURVIVOR BOOT LIST

JESSICA “SUGAR” Kiper – Sugar is a quirky nickname, but not a given name

STEPHENIE LaGROSSA – This is a twist on traditionally spelled Stephanie (a twist she shares with Twilight powerhouse Stephenie Meyer)

RANDY BAILEY

CIRIE FIELDS – I adore the name Cirie and would love to see it catch on

TOM WESTMAN

TYSON APOSTOL – very stylish right now

JAMES CLEMENT

ROB MARIANO

BENJAMIN “COACH” WADE – I bet most people don’t know his name is Benjamin. I don’t think many people will start naming their kids Coach

COURTNEY YATES

JAMES “J. T.” THOMAS – initial names are cool these days and J. T. might be the coolest among them

AMANDA KIMMEL – great name (though I am biased)

CANDICE WOODCOCK

DANIELLE DiLORENZO

RUPERT BONEHAM – one of the coolest names in Survivor history

COLBY DONALDSON – it had an impact before, maybe it will again

JERRI MANTHEY

RUSSELL HANTZ

PARVATI SHALLOW – without a doubt one of the most interesting names in Survivor history

SANDRA DIAZ-TWINE

Does anyone else like the name Cirie? I just love it.

Which names do you think could have the biggest impact on baby naming?

Happy naming,

  Amanda

ASK AMANDA: Surname Names, Please?

j0431585

Today’s ASK AMANDA brings us a question about surname names. What do you think about this trend?

Ask Amanda

Q:    We had a short list of names picked out – Thile, Fin, and Thad…. but Fin (too popular) and Thad (just doesn’t feel right) have been nixed.  We are currently sitting on ‘McClelland Thile’ (pronounced ‘theelie’) - which I love - but I’m still not sure it’s THE ONE.  Some other names we’re considering are Fisher, Beckett, Chanson, and Soren.  I just don’t feel like I’ve happened upon THE name.  Our chosen name will be paired with McClelland or Wayne (First/Middle doesn’t matter) which are family names.  I know you’ll have some suggestions for me!

Thanks!

JILIAN, Blacksburg, VA

A:    I’m so glad you wrote to me. This is a great question!

If I had to categorize the names on your list, I would say most fall into the surname name category. Because you have a definite style, it makes it easier to find some names you might like.

From the names you suggested, it doesn’t look like you like the more common surname names, like Cooper and Parker. With that in mind, I put together a list of some more unique surname names for you-

BOYS’ SURNAME NAMES

Baxter

Bishop

Booker

Cabot

Cord

Fletcher

Locke

Miller

Smith

Tucker

Walker

I think BAXTER, CABOT and CORD are an especially good match for middle name McClelland. I think the best matches for Wayne are BISHOP and MILLER.

If you’re still looking for more, I have tons of options in BABY NAMES MADE EASY. A good place to find surname names is the Occupations chapter.

 Best of luck to you!

Happy naming,

Quebec has released the Top Baby Names for 2009. Yesterday I discussed the GIRLS’ NAMES and today I have the BOYS’ LIST for you.

This is a great list of names! Enjoy and let me know your thoughts.

TOP 10 BOYS’ NAMES

All but one of these names is also on the U.S. list of top names. The names in the Top 100 include WILLIAM (#8), NATHAN (#21), GABRIEL (#24), SAMUEL (#28), THOMAS (#52) and XAVIER (#71).

The only name that isn’t on the U.S. list is OLIVIER, but the English version, OLIVER, ranks #118.

What do you think about this Top 10?

I found some other cool picks from the boy’s Top 500 list that you might like.

Parents in the U.S. tend to give their sons more traditional names. That trend has definitely been changing in recent years, but it’s still strong enough that I think some of these names would have a harder time catching on here in the U.S. than most of the names on the girl’s list.

What new names from this list do you think could find a home on the U.S. list?

Yesterday, I explored the hyphenated names on the girl’s list. Turns out there are quite a few on the boy’s list too.

Hyphenated Names from the Top 500:

CHARLES-ANTOINE

CHARLES-EDOUARD

CHARLES-EMILE

CHARLES-ERIC

What do you think of hyphenated names for boys?

Surprising finds:

#254 – JASMIN

#337 – EDEN

Top Girls’ Names in Quebec 2009

j0362634Quebec has released the Top Baby Names for 2009. It’s a great list full of beautiful names with a French twist.

I’ll talk about the GIRLS’ NAMES today and the BOYS’ NAMES tomorrow. Read on and enjoy.

TOP 10 GIRLS’ NAMES

LÉA

FLORENCE

EMMA

ROSALIE

JADE

JULIETTE

CAMILLE

GABRIELLE

MAIKA

MIA

These are really beautiful names, with a delightful French twist. Many of these names are popular here in the U.S. EMMA ranked #1 last year. Others in the Top 100 are MIA (#14) and GABRIELLE (#79). The more common U.S. spelling of LÉA is on our list – LEAH ranked #41.

The most surprising name on this list is FLORENCE at #2. I’m not sure it’s ready for a comeback yet in the U.S. Give it a couple generations and it might be back, but today it sounds out-of-date. Nickname FLO doesn’t fare any better.

What do you think of MAIKA? It’s not on the U.S. list at all. I think it’s pretty and, at least in the U.S., it would be unique. Do you think it could catch on?

There were some other pretty picks in the Top 500 I wanted to share with you.

There were also quite a few hyphenated names in the Top 500. I’ve always been intrigued by hyphenated names, so here are some of them ones from the list.

Hyphenated Names from the Top 500:

ANNE-FREDERIQUE

How do you feel about hyphenated names? I like them. I think they’re a good way to use popular names, while giving them a unique spin at the same time. It’s also a good alternative for parents who can’t narrow their favorites down to just one name.

Cool Names from the 2010 Edgar Nominees

j0321206Do you like scary mysteries? I do. I’m always eager to see what books are nominated for the Edgar awards so I can add even more books to my ever-growing piles of Books-I-Want-To-Read.

This year, some of the authors have pretty noteworthy names. Here are the names I thought were most interesting:

2010 Edgar Nominees

MALLA Nunn, A Beautiful Place to Die (Nominated for Best Novel)

SOPHIE Littlefield, A Bad Day for Sorry (Nominated for Best First Novel by an American Author)

ATTICA Locke, Black Water Rising (Nominated for Best First Novel by an American Author)

L.C. Tyler, The Herring-Seller’s Apprentice (Nominated for Best Paperback Original)*

LANEY Salisbury and ALY Sujo, Provenance: How a Con Man and a Forger Rewrote the History of Modern Art (Nominated for Best Fact Crime)

R.A. Scotti, Vanished Smile: The Mysterious Theft of the Mona Lisa (Nominated for Best Fact Crime)*

P.D. James, Talking About Detective Fiction (Nominated for Best Critical/Biographical Work)*

DENE Low, Petronella Saves Nearly Everyone (Nominated for Best Young Adult) – Petronella is an awesome name too!

MAC Barnett, The Case of the Mistaken Identity, (Nominated for Best Juvenile)

*I’ve done some research to figure out what these initial names stand for. Here’s what I found:

L. C. Tyler – According to Wikipedia the L stands for Len. I couldn’t confirm it on his website though. I did learn that he has a Border Collie named Thistle. Cute. For more: http://www.lctyler.com/

R. A. Scotti – R.A. stands for Rita Anjelica. The biography says that she decided to go by R. A. because her field was dominated by male writers so she decided to pose as a man. For more: http://rascotti.com/events.htm

P. D. James – P. D. stands for Phyllis Dorothy. For more: http://www.randomhouse.com/features/pdjames/abouttheauthor.html
