Name Your Baby Like a Celebrity : DAVID & VICTORIA BECKHAM

THE BECKHAMS

Everyone (me especially!) is eagerly awaiting the birth of David and Victoria Beckham’s fourth child. They were very creative with the names of their first three — Brooklyn, Romeo & Cruz — so you know that whatever they choose will be unique!   Reportedly, Author: Vtornetthis fourth child is going to be their first girl and their top name choice is Atlanta. What I’ve heard is that Atlanta is a reference to the Atlantic Ocean, which connects the Beckham’s native England and their current home, the United States. Awww… J

NAME YOUR BABY LIKE A CELEBRITY

The name Atlanta may be a little more daring than you want to go, but you can choose a name with a special meaning for you and your family and be as daring or traditional as you want. Ideas are everywhere: ·         The name of the college where you met ·         A name that reflects your cultural heritage ·         The city you lived in when you conceived your baby ·         The name of the singer who sings “your song” ·         The name of the person who introduced you ·         The name on the month you met ·         The possibilities are endless!

Twins Born in Different Years – Twice!

One Twin Born in 2010 and One in 2011 – Twice!

I had to share these amazing New Year’s twin birth stories…

Twin Set #1

In Illinois, Ashley Fansler and Brandon Lewis became the proud parents of daughter Madisen Carin Lewis, born 12/31/10, and son Aiden Everette Lewis born 1/1/11. Apparently, when it looked like there was a chance this could happen, the doctor asked them if they wanted to try for separate year births and the parents said yes. I’m not sure what I would have done in their place…my love for the number eleven might have been enough to sway against separate year births.footprints of girl and boy

NAME BONUS: If you read the whole article below, you learn that Madisen and Aiden’s great grandmother is named Dixie. I love finding cool retro names.

Twin Set #2

If that wasn’t enough, at the same time in North Carolina, something similar was happening. Christy and Marlin Alston welcomed Ashton Parker Alston on 12/31/10 and a couple minutes later daughter Alisha Rae Alston on 1/1/11.

TWIN NAME ANALYSIS
It’s not surprising that both sets of parents linked the twins by their names. Madisen and Aiden both have the -en ending, which isn’t the traditional way either name is spelled. Aiden is a very common spelling these days, but Aidan is the traditional spelling.

Christy and Marlin chose “A” names for their twins, Ashton and Alisha. I’ve written about “A” names before – they’re quite popular. I love “A” names myself- my name is Amanda, after all- but it’s interesting that we have such a love affair with these names.

LINK: Here’s a post I did about “A” Names if you’re looking for unique options.

What do you think about the twins’ names?

Reading Recommendation: CATHERINE, CALLED BIRDY (and Other Medieval Baby Names)

CATHERINE, CALLED BIRDY by KAREN CUSHMAN

For my new kidlit book club, I had to choose something in the historical fiction genre. I chose Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman solely by title (and the knowledge it was a Newbery Honor Book). The title told me there would be an interesting name story involved and I was right.

catherine-called-birdy-coverWithout giving too much of the story away, I can tell you that 14-year-old Catherine gets her nickname because she loves birds and keeps quite a menagerie in her bedroom. I love the way Cushman uses birds as a metaphor throughout the book. As a girl living in Medieval England, Birdy has very few choices and feels caged by the strict rules of society. Birdy spends the book fighting against what’s expected of her and longs to “fly free” to create a life of her choosing. I won’t spoil the ending, but I think birds are the perfect metaphor for this story. In a clever passage, Birdy describes each of her friends and family members as a different kind of bird. It’s great insight into the characters and left me wondering what kind of bird I am.

From a name perspective, I think it’s an interesting notion to have a nickname that comes from a hobby. I’d love to hear from readers who have a nickname like this or know someone who does – a fisherman who goes by Fish, a rock climber who goes by Rock, a baker who goes by Cookie. You get the idea. Write me!

In addition to Birdy, there were some other notable names in the book. Here are some of Cushman’s picks for this Medieval period piece (with my two cents thrown in):

FEMALE CHARACTER NAMES

AISLINNquite stylish these days

BERYL probably not a great choice these days

BIRDY (LITTLE BIRD)a great nickname

CATHERINEa timeless classic

ETHELFRITHA I’m not sure we’ll ever be ready for this one

JOANa little out-of-date these days

JOANNA slightly cooler than Joan

Lady AELIS quite lovely

MARJORIE Mustard– definitely out-of-date these days

MEG sweet as a nickname

MORWENNA definitely not ready for revival

MALE CHARACTER NAMES

BEHRTWALD no way

COB the Smith – I love the quirky nicknames

CUTHMAN Cook – not one of the better surname-sounding names

EDWARDa classic

GEOFFREY I really like the traditional spelling

GEORGEthese vintage-sounding names are on a comeback

GERDI love the quirky nicknames

HENRY Newhouse – a vintage name that’s chic again

JOHNa little too common these days

NORBERT less cool than Behrtwald

RALPH not ready for a comeback yet

RHYSstylish and cool

ROGER Moreton – I’ve always sort of enjoyed the name Roger

ROLLOthis is usually short for Roland (I’ve actually met a Rollo before)

THOMASanother classic

WILLIAM nickname Will is especially trendy right now

PETS’ NAMES

ANISE

BETONY

BRUTUS

PEPPERCORN

ROSEMARY

RUE

OTHER PEOPLE NAMED BIRD

This book isn’t the only place you’ll find Bird used as a name. Of course, there’s the famous first lady Lady Bird Johnson (born Claudia). Busy Phillips also recently named her daughter Birdie. Know of anyone else named Bird?

PET NAMES

If you don’t know already, I’m a big animal lover. I think pet names are every bit as interesting as people names—and sometimes even more so because people tend to be more creative with pet names. Catherine, Called Birdy had some great choices and I couldn’t leave them out. From this list, I think I love Peppercorn the most – so cute!

READ THE BOOK YOURSELF

Catherine, Called Birdy

Offside, Red-card and Vuvuzela among baby names registered during 2010 World Cup

I just read an interesting article about baby naming in South Africa during the World Cup. Apparently, there have been a number of babies named after the historic event:

·         Babies named after countries playing in the tournament, like FRANCE, BRAZIL, CAMEROON, ARGENTINA, ENGLAND and DENMARK

·         Babies named after soccer terminology, including OFFSIDE, RED-CARD, JERSEY, SUBSTITUTE, KICK-OFF and HALF-TIME

·         Babies named after soccer positions, such as STRIKER, MIDFIELDER, GOALKEEPER and COACH

·         Babies named after things related to the event itself, like SOCCER CITY, 2010, TICKETS, STADIUM and BALL

·         Babies named after players and coaches, including KAKA and PARREIRA

·         And, perhaps the most noteworthy name of all, the item that typified this World Cup, a baby named…VUVUZELA

Has anyone seen the Hyundai ad about the baby in England supposedly named after the soccer team in the 1960s? The ad is running during the ESPN World Cup coverage. The name from the ad (I had to listen to it several times to transcribe this…) is:

Paula St. John Lawrence Lawler Byrne Strong Yeats Stevenson Callaghan Hunt Milne Smith Thompson Shankly Bennett Paisley O’Sullivan

Watch it for yourself: Hyundai FIFA World Cup Baby Name Ad

Thanks to Wikipedia, I was able to find these names attached to the Liverpool Football Club.

Anyone out there dedicated enough to their sports team to try something similar? I meet someone recently who plans on naming a son after her favorite baseball player (Bengie Molina of the SF Giants)—but not the whole team!

What do you think about naming your child after your favorite sports team? Dedicated or wacky?

Happy naming,

  Amanda

Zoe and the Car

renault_zoe_z_e__concept-thomas-doerfer

I read an interesting article about names and cars. The French car company Renault is coming out with a new car they’re calling Zoe – the Renault Zoe ZE. They chose Zoe because it means “life,” which appears to be a nod to the environmental benefits of this zero emissions car. Pretty cool. Or maybe not…A French woman named Zoe Renault is asking the company not to name the car Zoe. She says it would bother her to hear things like, “Zoe’s broken down.”

Would you mind it if you had the same name as a car?

It will be interesting to see what happens here. Apparently, the attorney in this case has a number of clients with the same name.

The Zoe wouldn’t be the first car with a human name. Here are some others I found:

ASPEN

AURORA

AUSTIN

CAPRICE

CHEYENNE

COLT

COOPER

Crown VICTORIA

DAKOTA

DINO

ELECTRA

JIMMY

LIBERTY

MORRIS

ROCKY

SIENNA

SIERRA

Silver DAWN

Did I miss any?

If you loved a name, but then a car company (or any company) chose it for a product name, would you still use it?

You can read the article here.

AMY ADAMS, Photographer Chrisa Hickey

Amy and fiancé Darren Legallo welcomed a daughter over the weekend. Her name? AVIANA OLEA. So pretty!

Aviana is an interesting twist on the popular, similar-sounding names Ava (ranked #5), Avery (ranked #32) and Eva (ranked #99).

What do you think of Aviana?

Looking for other names with a similar twist? Consider:

Congrats to one of my favorite actresses (Amy Adams) from one of my favorite movies (Enchanted)—

The Top Baby Names of 2009

j0431538

This is one of my favorite days of the year! The Top Names of 2009 are out. Social Security has finally crunched all the numbers and revealed the results.

Here’s the Top 10:

GIRLS’ BABY NAMES

ISABELLA

EMMA

OLIVIA

SOPHIA

AVA

EMILY

MADISON

ABIGAIL

CHLOE

MIA

BOYS’ BABY NAMES

JACOB

ETHAN

MICHAEL

ALEXANDER

WILLIAM

JOSHUA

DANIEL

JAYDEN

NOAH

ANTHONY

The girl’s list consists primarily of feminine names with an old-fashioned feel. Madison is the notable exception – it’s unisex and sounds very modern and trendy.

The boy’s list is made up primarily of classic, traditional boys’ names, many dating back to the Bible.

Here are highlights:

NEW #1

There’s a new #1 for girls . . . Isabella knocked Emma out of the top spot. Just like Emma did to Emily last year.

MORE SHAKEUPS AT THE TOP

Mia entered the Top 10 for the first time at #10. It ranked #14 last year. Elizabeth was knocked out as a result. Elizabeth ranked #9 in 2008 and on the 2009 list it’s #11.

There are a couple new names on the boy’s list. Jayden ranked #8 – up from #11 in 2008. Noah ranked #9 – up from #15 in 2008. Christopher and Matthew dropped out of the Top 10 to make room for the newcomers. They didn’t go far though. Christopher dropped to #11 and Matthew dropped to #13.

TWINS:

We could all use more faith and hope

Social Security ranks the top names for all combinations of twins: two girls, two boys and one girl/one boy.

The top names for twin girls are Isabella and Sophia. These names are a good style match and are both in the Top 10 overall.

What’s more interesting to me is the #2 pair, Faith and Hope. These names are definitely a “match” stylistically, but individually they aren’t overly popular. Faith ranks #80 and Hope ranks #233. Could our economy be the inspiration? In tough times, maybe a baby’s name really can inspire.

Unisex names for girls

For twin sets with one girl and one boy, the top 3 sets feature traditionally boys’ names for the boy twin and unisex names for the girl twin. The parents have definitely gone with a similar sound with each pair, but other than that I’m not sure what to make of it. Reading the names you might guess these are sets of boy twins or wouldn’t be sure one way or the other.

Here are the top 3:

Madison (g) and Mason (b)

Taylor (g) and Tyler (b)

Addison (g) and Aiden (b)

TWILIGHT

The Twilight effect is real and here’s proof. The top mover for boys was the name Cullen – it jumped almost 300 spots. Cullen is the surname of the good vampires in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, including heartthrob Edward Cullen. Other top movers were Emmett and Jasper, also members of the Cullen family.

Of course, Isabella and Jacob are the #1 names this year. Isabella is the main character’s name, but she goes by Bella. Jacob is the third part of the love triangle. Both names have been popular for awhile though. Isabella has been in the Top 15 since 2002. Jacob has been the #1 boy’s name for a decade. So, did Twilight have an impact on the #1 names? It’s hard to say since they already started out so popular. We can definitely agree that the character’s popularity didn’t hurt the name’s popularity.

Will the Twilight-inspired names continue to rise? Only time will tell. I’ll be curious to see what happens with Esme and Rosalie next year. They’re also part of the Cullen family and both names have that old-fashioned charm parents are looking for these days.

Why have these Twilight names become popular?

Some are saying that these names have become popular because fans of the story are using the names for their babies. That’s probably a little true. But not in all cases. Because of the books and the movies we’re all hearing the names Emmett, Jasper and Cullen a lot, even people who haven’t read the books or seen the movies. There are a lot of parents who like fresh-sounding names, even if they don’t know where they’re from. So just hearing the name Cullen over and over again will inspire some parents to choose it because it sounds different.

Another good example of this phenomenon is Miley. Are all the parents who are naming their daughters Miley huge Miley Cyrus fans? Probably not. Most of her fans aren’t having babies yet. The name Miley has gotten popular because parents hear the name a lot in the press, like the sound of it because it’s new and different and then decide to use it for their baby. A lot of these parents end up surprised when they meet other kids named Miley at preschool.

We’ll know the true power of the Twihards if the name Renesmee ever makes the list.

Tell me what you think.

MORE LITERARY INSPIRATION

Romeo and Juliet were both top movers in 2009. Romeo jumped 54 slots and Juliet more than doubled that by jumping #134 slots. Juliette rose 112 spaces.

MORE READING

Read the Twilight books for yourself. Read at your own risk though. Before you know it, you might get the urge to name a baby after one of the characters:

Celeb Adoption: Louie, Louie

j0441798

I think everyone was surprised by Sandra Bullock’s exciting adoption news — I know I was. In case you haven’t heard, Sandra adopted baby LOUIS BARDO a couple months ago — and somehow managed to keep it a secret. I don’t know how she did it, especially with all the Oscar scrutiny at the beginning of the year — good for her.

In People magazine, I read that she consulted several baby name books (was Baby Names Made Easy one of them…?) and contemplated a lot of different names. She kept coming back to the name Louis though. She said she was particularly inspired by singer Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. Isn’t that sweet?

Did any of you find baby name inspiration in a song? Let me know. I might have to put together a playlist…

Sandra said she calls him Louie (lou-ee). I think it’s cute and unique. Of course, it’s a name we all know, but not one that’s very common these days. According to Social Security, Louis ranked #351 in 2008.

What do you think about the name Louis?

Best wishes to Ms. Bullock and her new baby!

Quebec has released the Top Baby Names for 2009. Yesterday I discussed the GIRLS’ NAMES and today I have the BOYS’ LIST for you.

This is a great list of names! Enjoy and let me know your thoughts.

All but one of these names is also on the U.S. list of top names. The names in the Top 100 include WILLIAM (#8), NATHAN (#21), GABRIEL (#24), SAMUEL (#28), THOMAS (#52) and XAVIER (#71).

The only name that isn’t on the U.S. list is OLIVIER, but the English version, OLIVER, ranks #118.

What do you think about this Top 10?

Parents in the U.S. tend to give their sons more traditional names. That trend has definitely been changing in recent years, but it’s still strong enough that I think some of these names would have a harder time catching on here in the U.S. than most of the names on the girl’s list.

What new names from this list do you think could find a home on the U.S. list?

Yesterday, I explored the hyphenated names on the girl’s list. Turns out there are quite a few on the boy’s list too.

Hyphenated Names from the Top 500:

CHARLES-ANTOINE

CHARLES-EDOUARD

CHARLES-EMILE

CHARLES-ERIC

CHARLES-ETIENNE

CHARLES-OLIVIER

What do you think of hyphenated names for boys?

Surprising finds:

#337 – EDEN
