The “A”s Have It: What Names Made the Grade?

“A” POPULAR LETTER

Parents love the letter “A,” even more than you might think. Long before visions of straight A’s on report cards are even in the picture, parents are choosing names that start with the letter “A.” Are they subtly urging their children toward those straight As? Hard to say, but here’s the breakdown…These are the “A” names that landed in the Top 20 in 2009 along with their ranks:

CB028838

GIRLS’ BABY NAMES

AVA = #5

ABIGAIL = #8

ADDISON = #12

ALEXIS = #13

ALYSSA = #19

ASHLEY = #20

BOYS’ BABY NAMES

ALEXANDER = #4

ANTHONY = #10

AIDEN = #12

ANDREW = #15

APPEALING “A” ALTERNATIVES

If you’re like most of the parents I talk to, you’re looking for a unique name that’s not weird. That perfect blend of uncommon, but easy to spell and pronounce. If that’s you, stay away from the names in above list and consider these “A” names instead:

GIRLS’ BABY NAMES

ADELAIDE

ALICE

ALLEGRA

ALTHEA

AMAIA or AMAYA

ANISE

ANNELISE

ARABELLE

ARIA

ASILAH

AVALON

AYELET

BOYS’ BABY NAMES

ABRAM

ADLER

ALISTAIR

ALONZO

AMOS

ARCHER

ARCHIBALD

ASHER

WHAT’S YOUR GRADE?

It’s your turn to grade these “A” names. Let me know what you think! You can email me or leave a comment. When you leave your first comment, you’ll need to take a couple seconds to “register.” It’s a way to prevent spammers from clogging up comment sections with off-topic advertisements. Once you do register though, you won’t have to worry about it again and can leave all the comments you want.

Happy naming,

100 YEARS OF BABY NAMING

100 YEARS OF BABY NAMING

Social Security has put together a ranking of the 100 Most Popular Names from the last 100 years. Do these names still appeal to parents today? You tell me.

Here are the Top 20 Names from 1910 to 2009:

00446418

GIRLS’ BABY NAMES

MARY

PATRICIA

JENNIFER

ELIZABETH

LINDA

BARBARA

MARGARET

SARAH

HELEN

SANDRA

DONNA

CAROL

KIMBERLY

THE BREAKDOWN: Girls

Comparing this list with today’s Top 20 is definitely an interesting study in style. Relatively few of the girls’ names are on top of the current charts. I think this hundred year retrospective illustrates that while some names maintain a timeless charm – Elizabeth and Sarah – other names lose that sense of cool and now sound unfashionable – Patricia and Carol.

How can you predict which names will stay fashionable and which names will lose their cool?

Fashion can be unpredictable. For example, I have no clue why skinny jeans are still popular when so few people can actually pull them off. Luckily, I have a better handle on name fashions. One thing you’ll notice about the timeless classics – Elizabeth, Sarah, James and Michael – is that most have a Biblical connection. These names have been around for millennia and haven’t had their popularity tied to a trend or fad. Names that become popular quickly or are related to a celebrity tend to fall out of favor before too long.

Translation: In the years to come, watch for trendy names like Miley and Jayden to fall onto the unfashionable list, while names like Elizabeth hold their ground.

Name to watch: BETTY. I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about this name lately. I’ve even heard of a handful of babies bestowed with the name Betty (some as a middle name). I also know of a cat named Betty, but I’m not sure that counts. And don’t underestimate the resurgence of love we’re all feeling for Betty White these days. As mentioned, celebrity has a huge influence on baby naming.

SOURCE: Social Security

THE BREAKDOWN: Boys

Boys’ names don’t change in style as dramatically as girls’ names do. That’s why the boy’s list still looks fairly current, with a few exceptions like Donald and Kenneth. Nearly half of the boys’ names are still in the Top 20 today. That’s pretty remarkable! What it tells us is that quite a few parents still gravitate toward traditional, classic boys’ names.

The 100 year’s list and today’s Top 20 both include: MICHAEL, WILLIAM, DANIEL, ANTHONY, CHRISTOPHER, MATTHEW, DAVID, JOSEPH and JAMES.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Why does the popularity of girls’ names change more than boys’ names? Tell me why you chose a traditional name (or why you didn’t!). You can email me or leave a comment and share your thoughts about this list. When you leave your first comment, you’ll need to take a couple seconds to “register.” It’s a way to prevent spammers from clogging up comment sections with off-topic advertisements. Once you do register though, you won’t have to worry about it again and can leave all the comments you want.

Happy naming,

  Amanda

Baby Name Smorgasbord: Stieg Larsson’s Guide to Baby Naming

BABY NAME SMORGASBORD

I’ve been reading the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series—I’m halfway through book two right now. They’re a great read, but not for the faint of heart. Any fans out there?

Swedish Meatballs

As I’ve mentioned before, I always enjoy names with an International flare. These Stieg Larsson novels are a veritable baby name smorgasbord! The books’ character lists include some great Scandinavian names that aren’t common here in the U.S. and some names that are pretty familiar. If you’re looking for some Swedish inspiration, you’ve got a range of options to choose from here.

Here are some of the names I thought were most interesting:

FEMALE CHARACTER NAMES

AGNES Mikaelsson – old-fashioned, but ready for a comeback?

AGNETA SOFIA Salander – unique and cute

ANNIKA Giannini – stylish

CAMILLA Salander – pretty and sophisticated

CECILIA Vanger – lovely

ERIKA Berger – common

HARRIET Vanger – too soon for a comeback…?

LISBETH Salander – the star of the books and the name list, too

MIA Johansson – wildly popular here in the U.S.

MONICA Figuerola – still makes me think of Friends

SONJA Modig – pretty

MALE CHARACTER NAMES

ANDERS Jonasson – sounds cool and has nickname potential

CHRISTER Malm – love it!

DAG Svensson – makes me think of Dagwood Bumstead

DIRCH Frode – I don’t think we’re ready for this one in the U.S. yet

DRAGAN Armansky – definitely makes a statement

EVERT Gullberg – cool surname name

GUNNAR Björck – sounds like a rock star

HENRIK Vanger – old-fashioned, but not ready for a comeback yet

HOLGER Palmgren – interesting

MAGGE Lundin – looks like a variation of Maggie

MIKAEL Blomkvist – cool alternative to Michael

TORSTEN Edklinth – off-beat, but I like it

Since I’m only on book two right now, I found a character list for book three on Wikipedia. Always handy for this sort of thing…

MY FAVES

What are your favorite names from my list? I really like Lisbeth. It’s related to Elizabeth – one of my all-time favorite names because it’s versatile and has so many variations, like Lisbeth. On the boy’s side, I like Christer. It reminds me of Christopher, but with a decidedly more fashion-forward appeal. You can also go with Chris as a nickname. Like I said, I’m partial to versatile names.

Which do you think would go over better today – Agnes or Agneta?

READ THE BOOKS

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl Who Played with Fire

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

Entertainment Weekly has The Shaw Report, I have The Baby Name Insider – the latest in cool and uncool baby names and trends. Baby naming trends change just as quickly as fashionable hairstyles, clothes and nursery themes. Here are my picks for today’s “Cool,” “In Limbo” and “Uncool” names and trends – some based on my opinion, some based on what I’m hearing from readers.

Themed Baby Names for Twins

NAMING MULTIPLES

Naming twins is twice as nice – and also, twice as hard. One thing you’ve probably heard of parents doing is choosing theme names. That’s two names that match in some way. Cleopatra and Marc Antony are famous theme namers. The middle names of their twins were Helios and Selene, to represent the sun and the moon. A subtle connection like this is a great way to create a name-connection between twins without going overboard.

42-17098376

Project Runway designer Peach Carr told me about going to school with twins named Melody and Harmony Musicif either of you are out there reading this, email me! These names actually demonstrate two ways of doing theme names – the first names are related to the last name and the first names are related to one another, too.

MIXED FEELINGS

I suspect that there’s going to be mixed feelings about this topic – some are going to love the idea of a theme and some will hate it. Most people will probably fall in the middle and think it depends on the theme and how obvious it is.

What do you think about themed baby names?

THEME NAME LISTS

If you’re so inclined, here are some theme ideas, ranging from the obvious to the more subtle:

COLORS

LAVENDER & VIOLET

JADE & IVORY

KELLY & HUNTER

BIANCA & BLAKE

LOCATIONS

AUSTIN & PHOENIX

BROOKLYN & LONDON

ASPEN & CHEYENNE

INDIA & ASIA

GEORGIA & CAROLINA

AVALON & CAMELOT

EASTON & WESTON

ANIMALS

ROBIN & RAVEN

COLUMBA & PALOMA

ASTRONOMY

SUN & STAR

VENUS & MARS

SOLEIL & COSMO

HELIOS & SELENE– the middle names of Cleopatra and Marc Antony’s twins

STELLA & CYRUS

Which pairs are your favorites? Have any other suggestions?

TAG, YOU’RE IT!

Know any families with theme names? I’d love to hear about it. You can email me or leave a comment. When you leave your first comment, you’ll need to take a couple seconds to “register.” It’s a way to prevent spammers from clogging up comment sections with off-topic advertisements. Once you do register though, you won’t have to worry about it again and can leave all the comments you want.

Island Baby Naming

na00086a

Tonight, I’m wrapped up in my thermals, a sweatshirt, a blanket and I have my cuddly cat next to me – I’m still freezing though. That’s summer in San Francisco for you. If you’re traveling here on vacation, come in the fall – that’s when we have warmer weather.

All this cold weather got me thinking about warmer locals, which led to island living, which eventually led to island naming. After a little research, I found that there are some interesting island names that could double as cool, unique baby names.

Here’s my list. I organized them into Girls’ and Boys’ lists, but that’s just one person’s opinion – mix and match as you see fit.

GIRLS’ BABY NAMES

CORSICA

IRELAND

JAMAICA

JAVA

SICILY

SUMATRA

TRINIDAD

BOYS’ BABY NAMES

CYPRUS

DEVON

FALKLAND

KODIAK

MELVILLE

SAMAR

SOMERSET

Lost actor Josh Holloway and wife Yessica Kumala went the island route and named their daughter Java in 2009.

What’s your favorite island name? Anything I should add to the list?

Happy naming,

  Amanda
