Sesame Street Baby Names

Happy 40th Anniversary Sesame Street! I’m sure many of you have happy memories of watching Sesame Street when you were growing up and now you’re passing the tradition on to your children. Maybe there’s an even bigger Sesame Street tradition you can pass on to your children…in the form of a name.

Here’s a look at Sesame Street character names (and the names some of the actresses, actors and puppeteers). While names like BIG BIRD, JUGHEAD and MR. NOODLE won’t work, there are plenty of interesting options that are worth considering. Enjoy!

Baby Name Inspiration from the 2009 Fall TV Lineup

j0441331

Television is a great for source of interesting names. Writers are a creative bunch and when they want a character to stand out, sometimes they use a name to help their cause — think CHANDLER from Friends. Sometimes the names are so interesting that they cross over and become popular with parents — think SAWYER from Lost.

Now that the Fall 2009 TV season is in full swing, it’s a good time to check out some of the character names from the new shows. There just might be some great names for parents-to-be on the hunt for something new and interesting. Here’s the list I put together of some of the memorable character names I found. And since some of the actor’s names were just as interesting, I added those to the list, too.

Let me know what you think. If I missed one of your favorites, add it to the list.

INTERNATIONAL BABY NAMES: Danish Royal Names

j0362657

Royals seem to do everything with a little more flare than us commoners and naming babies is no exception. Take a look at the (very) long names of the Danish Royal Family:

MALE NAMES

HENRIK, His Royal Highness The Prince Consort, (born HENRI MARIE JEAN ANDRÉ Count de Laborde de Monpezat)

FREDERIK ANDRÉ HENRIK CHRISTIAN, Prince of Denmark, Crown Prince, Count of Monpezat

CHRISTIAN VALDEMAR HENRI JOHN, Prince of Denmark, Count of Monpezat

JOACHIM HOLGER WALDEMAR CHRISTIAN, Prince of Denmark, Count of Monpezat

NIKOLAI WILLIAM ALEXANDER FREDERIK, Prince of Denmark, Count of Monpezat

FELIX HENRIK VALDEMAR CHRISTIAN, Prince of Denmark, Count of Monpezat

FEMALE NAMES

MARGRETHE ALEXANDRINE ÞORHILDUR INGRID, Her Majesty The Queen

MARY ELIZABETH, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess, Crown Princess of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat

ISABELLA HENRIETTA INGRID MARGRETHE, Princess of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat

MARIE AGATHE ODILE, Her Royal Highness Princess of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat

BENEDIKTE ASTRID INGEBORG INGRID, Princess of Denmark

and the  best, longest one of all…

ELISABETH CAROLINE-MATHILDE ALEXANDRINE HELENA OLGA THYRA FEODORA ESTRID MARGARETHE DÉSIRÉE, Princess of Denmark

SOURCE: Official royal website, http://www.kongehuset.dk/english/

One of my favorite things about these royal names is how long they are! I’m not sure why…maybe it’s just the name-lover in me liking the idea of choosing 11 names for a baby, instead of just a first and a middle. I know it would make filling out all those bubbles for the SAT difficult, but I say the more names the better!

What do you think? Post your thoughts and let us know!

Baby Name Sampler, Summer 2009

na00086a

Ever sit around wondering what people are naming their babies right now? Me too.

I’ve gathered a list of baby names used this summer so that we could look at the trends, see what names are out there and also just because it’s fun. The names came from a variety of hospital web nurseries.

I’ve put the names into categories based on the first names. The middle names don’t necessarily follow the same trend or style. A few names could fit into more than one category.

On to the names…Comment and let me know what you think!

It’s safe to say that the name BENTLY, in a variety of spellings, is increasing in popularity. I came across that name several times during my search and it was used for both boys and girls —a new addition to the unisex name options.

That’s it for today. See you again soon!

ASK AMANDA: How to Avoid Using the Next Most Popular Name

j0440614

I’m back with another edition of ASK AMANDA. This is a topic that I know is on the mind of many soon-to-be-parents!

Ask Amanda

Q:    My top baby name list used to include Emma, Jacob and Zachary. All of those names have become really popular now. I still love those names, but I don’t want my baby to have a name that’s too common. How do I avoid picking a name that will end up on the top of the charts?

A:    You have really good taste in names. The trouble is that you share that good taste with a lot of other people. Emma, Jacob and Zachary are all great names!

Some parents want to pick popular names, some don’t mind one way or the other, but for those that do … how do you choose a cool baby name that you love while making sure it stays unique?

I don’t offer any guarantees, but here are some tip-offs that a name is on its way to becoming ultra-popular:

1. CELEBRITY NAME

If there’s a new celebrity on the scene with an interesting or unusual name, it’s likely the name will increase in popularity.

Ex: MILEY Cyrus (MILEY wasn’t even on the charts before 2007) and ISLA Fisher (before 2008 ISLA hadn’t been in the Top 1000 since 1908)

It’s also possible that the name will become so closely associated with the celebrity that your baby’s name will always bring to mind that celebrity.

Some celebs are so closely associated with their unique first names that they don’t even need a last name to be recognizable — think PARIS, TIGER, OPRAH and BEYONCE.

2. CELEBRITY BABY NAME

Similar to #1 above, if a celebrity picks an interesting baby name, you can almost guarantee it will become more popular.

Ex: BROOKLYN Beckham created a wave of baby Brooklyns. Interestingly, more for girls than boys. Possibly because the name’s parts — BROOK and LYN — are each more associated with girls’ names.

Now, note that I said interesting baby name, not odd baby name.

Celebrity baby names like KAL-EL Cage and PILOT INSPEKTOR Lee haven’t had a similar impact on parents-to-be because these names are just too off-beat for the average parent — but you didn’t need me to tell you that.

3. CHECK THE NAME’S HISTORY ON THE SOCIAL SECURITY WEBSITE

The Social Security website is a great tool for soon-to-be-parents. You can search names to see how popular they’ve been over the years.

It’s obvious that a name is popular if it’s already in the Top 25 most popular names, but what if it’s not? Are you parents seeking unique names safe then? Not necessarily…

If the name you’re considering wasn’t in the Top 500 list 5years ago, but then debuted at 300, moved up to 100 within a few years and this year is at 60, it’s a good bet that it might be even more popular next year.

Watch out for these fast risers! If a name has been increasing in popularity quickly, even though it hasn’t reached the top of the charts yet, there’s a good chance it will before long.

4. CHECK NAMES FROM POPULAR TV SHOWS, MOVIES AND BOOKS

Remember that scene from Splash starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah where Tom’s character tells Daryl’s character than she needs to pick a human name because no one can pronounce her mermaid name? He suggests a few names, including Jennifer, Joanie and Linda. Then she sees the street sign for Madison Avenue and says she wants her name to be Madison. It’s a funny moment in the movie because at that time in our history Madison wasn’t a first name and Tom’s character tells her so!

I suspect a lot of people who saw that movie in 1984 fell in love with the name Madison because it was different and interesting. Now 25 years later the name that wasn’t a name has become quite popular — it hit the Top 10 in 1997 and hasn’t looked back since.

So before you choose a name, have a look and see whether it’s the name of a character in a popular TV show, movie or book.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the name CULLEN grows in popularity now that Stephenie Meyer has used it as the surname for her popular vampire family and the dreamy Edward Cullen in her mega-popular Twilight series.

Is anyone else out there on Team Jacob or is it just me…?

All that said, you can’t completely safeguard yourself from all future popular names.

You could choose the perfect, unique name for your baby this year, but if the rumors are true and the next Sex and the City movie features Carrie and Mr. Big having a baby that they just happen to name the exact same perfect, unique name you chose this year, there isn’t a whole lot you can do — you will be ahead of the curve though for having chosen it first.

Good luck!

  Amanda

4 Tips for Naming Twins

j0433868

Since Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick just welcomed twins MARION LORETTA ELWELL and TABITHA HODGE into their family last week, this seems like the perfect time to discuss baby names for twins.

Parents of twins often look for baby names that are related to one another in order to celebrate that special bond only twins share. Parents try to do this in a bunch of different ways and I’ve put together a list of ideas you can consider when naming twins:

« 4 TIPS FOR NAMING TWINS «

1. SAME MEANING

Choose names that have similar or complementary meanings. This is my favorite way to connect names (no surprise!). I wrote about this in the Introduction of BABY NAMES MADE EASY as a way to create a meaningful connection between siblings and their names, without being too obvious or cutesy.

A great example of this is Cleopatra and Mark Antony who name their twins HELIOS and SELENE, which mean “sun” and “moon,” respectively. Very cute, without being too cute…

2. SAME FIRST LETTER

You can use the same first letter for each name. This is relatively easy and you see it a lot. And I mean a lot… A whopping 8 out of the 10 most popular twin baby name pairings in 2008 follow this patter, according to Social Security. The top 10 are:

JACOB / JOSHUA

DANIEL / DAVID

JAYDEN / JORDAN

ETHAN / EVAN

TAYLOR / TYLER

GABRIELLA / ISABELLA

ISAAC / ISAIAH

MADISON / MORGAN

ELIJAH / ISAIAH

ELLA / EMMA

The people have spoken here. Clearly, lots of parents like the idea of choosing names with the same first letter for twins. Enough said.

3. FAMILY NAMES

You can use family names for each child. This is what Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick did — ELWELL and HODGES are both family names.

You could take a look at your family trees and either simply choose names you like at random or choose a particular type of relative, such as great grandmothers, and choose from only those options (provided you like those options, of course). You can mix and match from mom and dad’s family trees of just stick with one. Tons of choices here!

4. SAME THEME

When naming twins, consider choosing names with the same theme. For example, choose two different location names or two Biblical names. Rebecca Romjin and Jerry O’Connell chose floral middle names for their twin girls CHARLIE TAMARA TULIP and DOLLY REBECCA ROSE.

This is a great idea because there are so many options and you can get really creative about what theme you choose!

Looking for more inspiration? Here are the names of some of the twins born to celebrities in 2008:

        « CELEBRITY TWINS OF 2008 «

COCO TRINITY and SAWYER LUCIA — daughters of Diane Farr and Seung Chung

EMME MARIBEL and MAXIMILIAN DAVID — daughter and son of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony

FINLEY and HARPER — daughters of Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Lockwood

JUNO and REX — daughter and son of Marianne and Will Champion

VIVIENNE MARCHELINE and KNOX LEON — daughter and son of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

VALENTINO and MATTEO — sons of Ricky Martin

CELEBRITY BABY NAME ALERT: Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick welcomed twin girls MARION LORETTA ELWELL and TABITHA HODGE. Congratulations! The twins have an older brother, JAMES WILKIE.

Curious about what the names mean? Here you go:

MARION is an English and French version of Maria meaning “bitter”

TABITHA is an Aramaic name that means “gazelle”

These are both cute names. Both names have an older, traditional feel to them. I especially like TABITHA — it has always been one of my favorite names. I bet it sees a rise in popularity now. That makes me a little happy and sad at the same time.

According to their publicist, Elwell and Hodge are family names.

What do you think about the twin’s names? Post your comments!

BABY NAMES OF THE WEEK: “Coffee” Baby Names

j0433885

I used to be strictly a vanilla latte girl. Then I moved to LA and discovered The Coffee Bean and vanilla ice blendeds. Amazing and delicious. When I moved back to Northern California (where there are, sadly, very few Coffee Beans), I was back to vanilla lattes. Then the other day, out of nowhere, I had to have an iced mocha. It was pretty tasty and I might have a new drink. We’ll see how long it lasts. I guess you could say I’m a creature of habit when it comes to drinks.

Anyhow, I’ve been dreaming of (and drinking) iced mochas all week and so I set out to find Baby Names of the Week that would satisfy my coffee-craving and also work as baby names.

Here are my picks:

GIRLS’ BABY NAME OF THE WEEK

DULCINEA — Spanish & Italian name meaning “sweet”

BOYS’ BABY NAME OF THE WEEK

NADIM — Arabic name meaning “drinking companion, confidant”

I picked DULCINEA because I like my coffee sweet. I’ve always considered coffee really just a vehicle for cream and sugar—and vanilla and chocolate. Plus, DULCINEA is a cute name. It comes from the name DULCE, which is cute, too. DULCINEA is also the name of a character in Don Quixote.

NADIM was an easy pick because we all know coffee tastes better with friends (or when you’re procrastinating).

Naming a child after coffee might be a little too whimsical for some, but I say you can find inspiration everywhere you look. You don’t have to act on that inspiration, but you can definitely find it.

There’s also a coffee-themed celebrity baby name:

CELEBRITY BABY NAME

JAVA — daughter of Yessica Kumala & Josh Holloway (Lost)

Not sure if they’re fans of the drink or the island, but either way JAVA is a unique baby name. I wouldn’t be surprised if it saw a surge in popularity in the future.

What’s your favorite coffee drink? Let me know. Next time I’m feeling adventurous, I might give it a try.

That’s all for today! Tune in on Tuesday for another edition of INTERNATIONAL BABY NAMES. We’re heading to….ICELAND!

CELEBRITY BABY NAME ALERT: Alex Lloyd (IndyCar Racer)

Samantha and Alex Lloyd (IndyCar racer) welcomed baby girl BETHANY AMELIA on June 2, 2009. Congrats!

BETHANY AMELIA is a very pretty name, in my opinion. Bethany reached it’s peak of popularity in the 1980s, but the name Amelia has been steadily rising in popularity for the last 10 years, jumping a few spots every year. In 2008 Amelia ranked as the 68th most popular baby name for girls, according to Social Security. Sixty-eight is the highest Amelia has ever ranked and I wouldn’t be surprised if it continues to head up the list. Amelia has a classic feel to it without feeling too trendy. It is German in origin and means “energetic, hardingworking; rival.”

Do you think Amelia will become more popular or has it peaked? Post your prediction!
