Name Your Baby Like a Celebrity : DAVID & VICTORIA BECKHAM

THE BECKHAMS

Everyone (me especially!) is eagerly awaiting the birth of David and Victoria Beckham’s fourth child. They were very creative with the names of their first three — Brooklyn, Romeo & Cruz — so you know that whatever they choose will be unique!   Reportedly, Author: Vtornetthis fourth child is going to be their first girl and their top name choice is Atlanta. What I’ve heard is that Atlanta is a reference to the Atlantic Ocean, which connects the Beckham’s native England and their current home, the United States. Awww… J

NAME YOUR BABY LIKE A CELEBRITY

The name Atlanta may be a little more daring than you want to go, but you can choose a name with a special meaning for you and your family and be as daring or traditional as you want. Ideas are everywhere: ·         The name of the college where you met ·         A name that reflects your cultural heritage ·         The city you lived in when you conceived your baby ·         The name of the singer who sings “your song” ·         The name of the person who introduced you ·         The name on the month you met ·         The possibilities are endless!

Amy Adams & Birthplace Baby Names

Aviano, Italy becomes Aviana

Apparently, Amy Adams was born in Italy. Aviano, Italy, to be exact. Which is how Amy came up with the sweet name Aviana for her daughter. Amy and partner Darren Le Gallo had originally been set on more traditional names, but kept coming back to the very unique name Aviana Olea. by Chrisa Hickey

Geography-inspired names have been trendy for awhile. There are several different geographical inspirations – fave vacation spot, honeymoon local, place of conception. Now we can add parent’s birthplace to the list.

What do you think about naming a baby after your birthplace? I would say it probably depends on where you were born. I was born in a little place called Walnut Creek. It’s a very cute name for a town, but I’m not sure that it has the makings of a good baby name. A little girl named Walnut? A baby boy named Creek? I don’t think so. If I’d been born in Aviano, Italy, it might be a different story though.

You can read more about Amy’s name choice here.

5 Reason Why the Name Orion Should be More Popular

I Love the Name Orion

I’ve always loved the name Orion and am constantly surprised that it isn’t more popular. I’ll admit that the cool kid in my elementary school named Orion may have colored my view of the name initially, but that was years ago…I have 5 timely reasons why more parents should consider the name:

 723px-orion_constellation_hevelius

1.      Orion has never been a trendy baby name

Parents I talk to are often looking for a name with that perfect balance of familiar, but not too common. Orion fits the bill. Everyone’s heard the name, but not everyone knows an Orion. In fact, the highest Orion has ever ranked on the Social Security charts is in the 500s.

2.      Orion is similar to a longtime favorite, but with a twist

The name Ryan has been popular for ages. Orion has a very similar sound, but is a dash more interesting because it’s more unique. That’s saying a lot coming from me because Ryan has always been one of my favorite names—but it’s been the favorite of a lot of other people, too, which is why it might be time to give Orion a chance.

3.      Orion has that cool “O” initial

Parents love names with cool initials. “J” and “A” are among the most popular initials these days, but a lot of cool names start with “O,” too. Granted, nowhere near as many names as either “J” or “A,” but there are a few popular ones – Olivia, Owen, Oliver, Oscar, Orlando and Olive. I really think Orion should be on that list.

4.      Orion has a cool history

I love that Orion is the name of a popular constellation. Even if you’re not an astronomy buff, this is pretty cool. Plus, it’s one of the few constellations that most people can identify on sight. Names with cool histories are interesting.

5.      Mr. Big named his son Orion

In 2009, Chris Noth used Orion for his son. Like it or not, there’s nothing like a celebrity endorsement to add some swagger to a name.

So why isn’t the name Orion more popular? You tell me.

What do you think about Orion?

Island Baby Naming

na00086a

Tonight, I’m wrapped up in my thermals, a sweatshirt, a blanket and I have my cuddly cat next to me – I’m still freezing though. That’s summer in San Francisco for you. If you’re traveling here on vacation, come in the fall – that’s when we have warmer weather.

All this cold weather got me thinking about warmer locals, which led to island living, which eventually led to island naming. After a little research, I found that there are some interesting island names that could double as cool, unique baby names.

Here’s my list. I organized them into Girls’ and Boys’ lists, but that’s just one person’s opinion – mix and match as you see fit.

GIRLS’ BABY NAMES

CORSICA

IRELAND

JAMAICA

JAVA

SICILY

SUMATRA

TRINIDAD

BOYS’ BABY NAMES

CYPRUS

DEVON

FALKLAND

KODIAK

MELVILLE

SAMAR

SOMERSET

Lost actor Josh Holloway and wife Yessica Kumala went the island route and named their daughter Java in 2009.

What’s your favorite island name? Anything I should add to the list?

Happy naming,

  Amanda

Baby Naming Tip from Amanda Peet

00439515

When you can’t decide between two different names, write both down on separate pieces of paper, put them in a bowl and choose one. Your gut reaction will tell you which name you like better. If you’re excited about your pick, you have your name. If you’re disappointed and want to choose again, the name you didn’t choose is the winner.

According to People.com, Amanda Peet and her husband, David Benioff, did a version of this when naming their daughter, Molly June. Amanda and David were torn between two names – Molly June and Maya June. They couldn’t leave the hospital without picking a name, so David wrote the names on pieces of paper and held them behind his back. Amanda chose the paper that said Maya June and was disappointed…so they decided to go with Molly June.

I think they made the right choice – Molly June flows a little more smoothly than Maya June. What do you think?

Celeb Birth: COSIMA Times Two

00182765

There’s a new name in the celebrity baby naming world. Believe it or not, there have been two baby Cosimas born in the last few weeks. What are the odds of that?

First, a bit about the name Cosima. It’s a Greek name that means “universe, order.” It’s the feminine form of Cosmo. It has the same root as words like cosmos, cosmic and cosmonaut. No surprise, you’ll find the name in the Astronomy chapter of BABY NAMES MADE EASY.

So what celebs chose Cosima?

COSIMA #1

First we have Cosima Violet – the daughter of Claudia Schiffer and Matthew Vaughn. She was born on May 14, 2010. Older siblings include Caspar who’s 7 and Clementine who’s 5 ½. Apparently they’re going with the “C” initial theme from mom Claudia’s name. I’ve always wondered how the parent who doesn’t share the initial feels. Any thoughts?

Sibset: If I were grading this sibset match, I’d give it an A. Caspar, Clementine and Cosima make a great sibset because the names are a good style match. They all have an antique, classic, yet quirky feel.

COSIMA #2

The second Cosima is the daughter of Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars. The report I read didn’t give a birth date, but baby Cosima was apparently born in June. The couple have another daughter named Romy who’s 3 ½.

Here’s my question. What’s the baby’s last name? Is she Cosima Mars? If so, that’s a very astro-friendly name! Maybe she’s Cosima Coppola – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I really like alliteration. I know not everyone does though. Either way, this is a unique name.

Sibset: This is an interesting sibset because the names aren’t really a style match. They’re both a little quirky, so that fits, but Cosima is quite feminine while Romy is a unisex name. What do you think of that?

SOURCE: US (Cosima #1) and People (Cosima #2)

IT’S YOUR TURN…

What do you think of the name Cosima?

Celeb Birth: It’s a Girl for Tiffani Thiessen

mc90023725211

Actress Tiffani Thiessen and husband Brady Smith welcomed their first daughter. Her name? HARPER RENN.

Harper is a newly minted hot name – it entered the Social Security Top 1000 for girls for the first time in 2004 and it’s already ranked #174. That’s a pretty fast climb! Of course, the most famous Harper is Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird. I wonder if this was the inspiration for Harper Renn or not.

SOURCE: US Magazine

What do you think of the name Harper?

Speaking of names…is Tiffani no longer going by Tiffani Amber? All the reports I read about the birth identified her as just Tiffani. She was one of the most famous celebs with a double name – like Sarah Jessica Parker and Sarah Michelle Gellar. If anyone has the scoop on Tiffani’s name, let me know!

In the meantime, congrats to the lucky family!

Happy naming,

  Amanda

Amy and fiancé Darren Legallo welcomed a daughter over the weekend. Her name? AVIANA OLEA. So pretty!

Aviana is an interesting twist on the popular, similar-sounding names Ava (ranked #5), Avery (ranked #32) and Eva (ranked #99).

What do you think of Aviana?

Congrats to one of my favorite actresses (Amy Adams) from one of my favorite movies (Enchanted)—

Celeb Adoption: Louie, Louie

j0441798

I think everyone was surprised by Sandra Bullock’s exciting adoption news — I know I was. In case you haven’t heard, Sandra adopted baby LOUIS BARDO a couple months ago — and somehow managed to keep it a secret. I don’t know how she did it, especially with all the Oscar scrutiny at the beginning of the year — good for her.

In People magazine, I read that she consulted several baby name books (was Baby Names Made Easy one of them…?) and contemplated a lot of different names. She kept coming back to the name Louis though. She said she was particularly inspired by singer Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World. Isn’t that sweet?

Did any of you find baby name inspiration in a song? Let me know. I might have to put together a playlist…

Sandra said she calls him Louie (lou-ee). I think it’s cute and unique. Of course, it’s a name we all know, but not one that’s very common these days. According to Social Security, Louis ranked #351 in 2008.

What do you think about the name Louis?

Best wishes to Ms. Bullock and her new baby!

Happy naming,

  Amanda
