Top Pet Names of 2009

A topic I love almost as much as baby names is pet names. MSNBC has a cute feature about the top pet names of 2009 so I thought I’d share it because I know there are some pet lovers out there reading this.

I have a cat I named Trixie. No surprise, I chose that name because of its meaning — “blessed; bringer of joy.” She’s perfect and brings me joy on a daily basis. Here’s her picture:

It’s interesting that all of the top dogs’ names are human names, but only six of the top cat names are human names. That probably says something about how people see dogs and cats. Thoughts?

They also highlighted some of the funnier pet names. Here are my favorites:

DOOGIE SCHNAUZER, MD — hilarious!

EARTHA KITTY

FLUFFERNUTTER

KANYE EAST

VELVET ELVIS

CATZILLA

    Enjoyed this post.

Our teacup Maltese is named Diamond. Her registered name is “Diamonds are Forever.”

  2. 2 Elizabeth

We have 2 dogs named Dude and Millie, a cat named Chloe, and a horse named Joy.

  3. 3 Elizabeth

We just recently lost a cockatiel named Mike, a cat named Crystal, and a dog named Toby.

  4. 4 Amanda Barden

That’s a great name — are you a James Bond fan or a diamond fan (or both?!)?

  5. 5 Amanda Barden

I’m sorry to hear about your lost pets. :(

It sounds like you have quite a few animals, which must make for an energetic household — I especially like the names Millie and Joy! So cute.

  6. 6 Mark

Great post! Our cat is named Steve and he is awesome!

  7. 7 Little Ponytail Woman

My husband is a James Bond fan, & I am a “diamond” fan. It’s also what my sorority sisters called “big” & “little” sisters, “diamonds.”

Coincidentally, I’d had our daughter’s name picked out since I was a little girl & read it in a book, but then found out before we had her that it was also a “Bond girl” name. We’ve talked about using another Bond name in the future to carry on our “tradition.”

  8. 8 Amanda Barden

Sounds like “Diamonds are Forever” was an easy pick for you guys!

  9. 9 Sebastiane

    Cute cat!

We just usually call our cats “Kitty”, it works every time.

  10. 10 Amanda Barden

That’s funny! You’re such a name lover that I wouldn’t have guessed that. “Kitty” is very cute tradition. :)

  11. 11 Elizabeth Neilson

My husband and I have two female cats: Venom and Ivy.

Their full names are Venom Bellatrix Mystique and Ivy Claire Nyota.

Venom is named after characters from Spider-Man, Harry Potter, and X-Men; Ivy is named after characters from Batman, Heroes, and Star Trek.

To add to the fun, Venom has an engraved Spider-Man charm, and Ivy has an engraved Batman charm!

  12. 12 Amanda Barden

What great names — and I wholly approve of giving pets full names! My cat’s full name is Special Agent Trixie Tremaine.

  13. 13 Amanda Barden

It’s so cool to see how many people have been inspired to share their pet names. Keep them coming!

  14. 14 Elizabeth

Amanda, I have a cat named Flower. She came to me with that name and I didn’t feel right changing it. I never cared for it but it has grown on me quote a bit over the years. Have you ever thought of writing a pet naming book? I think people are so creative and daring with their pet names but when it comes to me naming a new pet I can never think of anything original.

  15. 15 Amanda Barden

I understand not wanting to change the name of an adult cat - could be confusing for the kitty! That said, I think Flower is a cute name. I’d love to write a pet naming book and have given it quite a bit of thought! Thanks for the support. :)

    Sweet post.
